Why do we continue to fight Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)?
Because every girl deserves the chance to grow up safe, healthy, educated, and empowered to make her own choices.
FGM is not a rite of passage—it is a harmful practice that threatens girls’ health, violates their rights, and too often interrupts their education, confidence, and dreams. No girl should have to sacrifice her future in the name of tradition.
At Tharaka Women Welfare Programme (TWWP), we believe that culture should be a source of identity, pride, and protection—not harm. That is why, since 1996, we have worked hand in hand with communities to promote positive cultural practices through Alternative Rite of Passage (ARP), community dialogue, mentorship, parental engagement, and girls’ empowerment.
Every girl who completes ARP instead of undergoing FGM is a testament to what communities can achieve when they choose compassion, education, and hope over harmful traditions.
Together with parents, elders, religious leaders, schools, and partners, we are building a future where girls are celebrated for their potential, supported to stay in school, and empowered to become leaders in their communities.
Protect the girl. Preserve her dignity. Empower her future. End FGM.
